The anime is adapting the Gag Manga Biyori (Masuda Kousuke Gekijou Gag Manga Biyori) series by Kosuke Masuda. Initially serialized in Monthly Shonen Jump from 1999, but was moved to Jump SQ. after the original magazine ceased publication (during the break it was briefly published in the Weekly Shonen Jump). The manga ended in 2014, but the sequel, titled Gag Manga Biyori GB, continued in Jump SQ. in 2015. It is still ongoing.
The Gag Manga Biyori manga was first adapted into anime in 2002 by Dax Production for a Jump Festa special. In 2005 it received a 12 five-minute episode adaptation by studio Artland, which was followed by a sequel in 2006 and 2008. Studio DEEN took over the adaptation in 2010, with a 25-episode season, titled Gag Manga Biyori +. All seasons will be streaming on It’s Anime YouTube channel and Amazon Prime Video (excluding Japan and certain territories) from April 5.
