The Haruhi Suzumiya novel series recently revealed Volume 13: Haruhi Suzumiya Gekijyo (The Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya), four years after Volume 12. The series, written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito, began publication in 2003. Two manga adaptations were also serialized by Kadokawa. The first by Makoto Mizuno, ran from May to December 2004 and its chapters were compiled into one volume. The second manga, titled The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya with art by Gaku Tsugano, was serialized from 2005 to 2013 in Kadokawa’s Comic Ace magazine. It ended after 20 volumes. Yen Press licensed the light novel and Tsugano’s manga.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime by Kyoto Animation premiered in 2006. The anime was broadcast in non-chronological order, adapting random stories from the light novel series. The previews for next week’s episodes had both the airing order number and the actual, chronological, episode number while the home video version was ordered properly. The second season was announced in 2007 and wouldn’t air until 2009. The first season was rebroadcasted in April of that year with proper episode order (and DVD release edits). However, the new episodes were mixed in where they fit chronologically. After the finale of the second season, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie was announced. The movie, which shares the title with the fourth novel of the light novel series, premiered in 2010.
The first four novels have been fully adapted, along with parts of The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya (6). The franchise spawned audio dramas, games, spin-offs, and more. The series won multiple Sneaker Awards.
